compensatory education

Programmes for targeting special resources and schooling at so-called problem groups, in the belief that carefully designed curricula (for example in language skills) will overcome the supposed cognitive and motivational deficit experienced by children from deprived backgrounds. Frequently linked with human capital theory , the assumption of such education is that under-achievement is an individual problem, and that schools can in some way compensate for structured social inequality.
